We have an incredible opportunity for a Syngap 1 research project- ERC – Synergy Grant

We found out about a great opportunity to start research Syngap1 after talking to Claudia from our EU office.
This is a huge project within the accordance of EU-funding. One hurdle – to apply for the research project we need to have a research team in place by November 2018.
The Synergy Grant is the most prestigious tool in the EU -funding. If we are successful with our application we would get a lot of attention on Syngap which otherwise would be hard to get.

The funding can last 6 years, and the Grant allowance, allows the ability to apply for up to 10 Million EUR.

Top investigators are hard to find- but there is a silver lining.

Next step would be to bring together the principal investigators that are part of the application process. We need 2-4 people that are multidisciplinary, put together to generate synergies within accordance of guidelines of the research. Good news- We already have one top investigator. A professor of informatics has committed to researching the subject – data science. A massive flood of patient data like genetic analysis and exome analyses as well as blood, urine and salivary juice tests are supposed to be analyzed through algorithms. To analyze this amount would take years itself. Our goal is to find similarities that are unknown at the moment and best case to find new treatment approaches.

Requirements on the investigators:

30% of the their work time must go into Synergy Grant and at least 50% of their entire work time must be done in a EU -member state or an associate state. The second rule doesn’t count for someone as example from the USA or a another third country.

We are looking for a geneticist, cell biologists, neurobiologist, development geneticist.

Eine wahnsinns Chance für die Syngap1 Forschung – ERC-Synergy Grant

Nach dem Gespräch mit Claudia vom EU-Büro haben wir eine ganz tolle Möglichkeit aufgezeigt bekommen an Syngap1 zu forschen. Ein großes Projekt im Rahmen einer EU-Förderung (ERC- Synergy Grant). Der Nachteil. Um unser Forschungsprojekt einreichen zu können, müssen wir bis zum November unser Forscher-Team aufgestellt haben.
Ein Synergy Grant ist das prestigeträchtigste Werkzeug der EU-Förderung.
Wären wir erfolgreich mit unserem Antrag, würde dies auch auf Syngap eine größere Aufmerksamkeit legen, die so nur schwer zu bekommen ist. Wichtig ist hierbei auch, dass Synergy Grants High-Risk
Research beinhalten und somit auch Ergebnis offen sind. Die Förderung kann über sechs Jahre laufen und es können bis zu 10 Mio. EUR beantragt werden. ERC Synergy Grant (siehe auch

Top Forscher sind schwer zu bekommen – einen Lichtblick gibt es aber

Hierzu wäre der nächste Schritt, die entsprechenden Forscher, die maßgeblich an dem Antrag beteiligt sein sollen (=Principal Investigators = PI) zusammenzubringen. Es handelt sich dabei um 2-4 vier PIs, die interdisziplinär zusammengesetzt sein sollen, damit eben wirklich “Synergien” im Rahmen der Forschung erreicht werden können. Die gute Nachricht ist. Einen Top-Forscher haben wir bereits. Der Professor für Informatik soll das Thema Datascience (Datenanalyse der Gesundheitsdaten) angehen. Eine riesige Flut an Patienten Daten (z.B. Gen-/Exomanalysen, Blut,-Urin,-Speichel-Tests ) soll durch spezielle Algorithmen ausgewertet werden. Diese Datenflut selbst auszuwerten würde Jahre dauern. Unser Ziel ist es dabei Gemeinsamkeiten zu entdecken, die noch nicht bekannt sind und damit im besten Fall auch neue Behandlungsansätze zu entdecken.

Anforderung an den Forscher:

Es müssen mindestens 30% der Arbeitszeit für den Synergy Grant aufgebracht werden und mindestens
50% seiner gesamten Arbeitszeit muss in einem EU-Mitgliedsstaat oder Assoziierten Staat verbracht werden. Die zweite Regelung gilt aber (glücklicher Weise) nicht für einen PI aus z.B. den USA (bzw. generell jemanden aus einem “Drittstaat”) 🙂
